Common Materials for Slotter Blades

• Tool Steel: Various grades of tool steel, such as D2, A2, and O1, are commonly used for slotter blades due to their good wear resistance and ability to hold a sharp edge. The specific grade is chosen based on the expected production volume and the abrasiveness of the cardboard being processed.
• High-Speed Steel (HSS): Offers excellent wear resistance, especially at higher operating speeds. Certain grades of HSS can be used for demanding slotting applications.
• Carbide-Tipped Blades: For very high production volumes and abrasive corrugated materials, slotter blades with carbide inserts provide superior wear resistance and extended lifespan. Carbide tips maintain sharpness for longer periods, reducing downtime for blade changes.

The hardness and precision grinding of the slotter blades are crucial for clean cutting and accurate scoring. Proper heat treatment ensures the blades can withstand the stresses of continuous operation.

Common Slotter Blade Shapes

Slotter blades typically come in sets, with male (knife) and female (anvil or scoring rule) components working together to create the slot and score. Common shapes and configurations include:

• Male Slotting Knives: These are sharp, circular or shaped blades that cut through the corrugated board. The profile of the knife determines the width and shape of the slot. Common male knife shapes include straight edges for standard slots and shaped edges for more complex cutouts.
• Female Slotting Anvils (Scoring Rules): These are typically grooved or profiled rollers or bars against which the male knife presses. The shape and depth of the groove determine the score line on the cardboard, facilitating folding. Scoring rules can be made of steel or polyurethane, with polyurethane offering some cushioning.
• Combination Slotting and Scoring Heads: Some slotter blade assemblies integrate both the cutting knife and the scoring rule into a single unit for simultaneous operation.
• Adjustable Slotter Heads: These allow for quick changes in slot width and scoring line position to accommodate different box sizes and designs. They often feature segmented blades and adjustable scoring dies.
• Rotary Die Cutters: While not strictly slotter blades, rotary die cutters can perform complex slotting and cutting operations in a rotary fashion, often used for higher volume and intricate designs.

The working principle involves the male slotter blade rotating and pressing against the corrugated board, cutting through it as it passes the female scoring rule. The scoring rule simultaneously creates a controlled crease in the board, allowing for precise folding along that line. The distance between the slot and the score line, as well as the depth and width of the slot and score, are critical parameters determined by the slotter blade and anvil configuration.
