Uses and Applications of Alligator Shear Blades

Alligator shear blades are widely used in metal processing and recycling industries for reducing the size of various metallic materials. Key applications include:

  • High-Carbon Steel: Offers good initial sharpness and is suitable for cutting softer metals.
  • Alloy Tool Steel (e.g., D2, A2, 6CrW2Si, H13): Provides a better balance of hardness, wear resistance, and toughness, making them suitable for a wider range of materials, including harder ferrous and non-ferrous metals. D2 is particularly known for its excellent wear resistance.
  • 高速度鋼 (HSS) Offers superior wear resistance and the ability to retain hardness at higher operating temperatures, suitable for more demanding and continuous cutting operations.

Alligator shear blades typically have a relatively simple, robust design to withstand high cutting forces. Common shapes include:

  • Straight Blades (Rectangular Cross-Section): The most common type, featuring a flat, straight cutting edge on both the upper and lower blades. These create a direct shearing action.
  • Beveled Edge Blades: The cutting edges are angled to create a more efficient shearing action and can be single or double bevel depending on the application.
  • Reversible Blades (4-Sided): Many alligator shear blades are designed to be rotated, offering four distinct cutting edges before needing regrinding or replacement. This maximizes blade life.
  • Custom Profiles: Depending on the specific material being cut or the desired cut shape, blades with specialized profiles or notches can be manufactured.

The working principle involves the hinged upper blade being forced down by a hydraulic cylinder (or sometimes mechanical means) onto the stationary lower blade, with the material to be cut placed between them. The high force exerted by the shear cleanly severs the material. The length of the blades (ranging from 6 inches to 48 inches or more) and the cutting force of the shear determine the type and thickness of material that can be processed.
