Mechanical cutting reduces edge ductility; minimizing damage in the shear-affected zone is essential for better HER. Guidance from WorldAutoSteel notes that while mild steels may run at ~6\u20138% clearance (as % of thickness), AHSS grades\u2014especially >1400 MPa\u2014often require significantly larger clearances to reduce galling and stress at the cutting edge.
