Common Materials for Alligator Shear Blades

• High-Carbon Steel: Offers good initial sharpness and is suitable for cutting softer metals.
• Alloy Tool Steel (e.g., D2, A2, 6CrW2Si, H13): Provides a better balance of hardness, wear resistance, and toughness, making them suitable for a wider range of materials, including harder ferrous and non-ferrous metals. D2 is particularly known for its excellent wear resistance.
• High-Speed Steel (HSS): Offers superior wear resistance and the ability to retain hardness at higher operating temperatures, suitable for more demanding and continuous cutting operations.
• Specialty Alloys: For specific applications, blades might be made from or inlaid with other tough and wear-resistant alloys to handle very hard or abrasive materials.
• Tungsten Carbide: Used as inserts or sometimes for the entire blade for exceptional hardness and wear resistance when processing highly abrasive materials, significantly extending blade life.

Blades are often heat-treated to achieve optimal hardness (typically in the range of HRC 55-65) to maximize cutting performance and longevity. Many alligator shear blades are also 4-sided and reversible, allowing each cutting edge to be used before requiring sharpening or replacement, maximizing their lifespan and cost-effectiveness.

Common Scrap Shear Blade Shapes

Alligator shear blades typically have a relatively simple, robust design to withstand high cutting forces. Common shapes include:

• Straight Blades (Rectangular Cross-Section): The most common type, featuring a flat, straight cutting edge on both the upper and lower blades. These create a direct shearing action.
• Beveled Edge Blades: The cutting edges are angled to create a more efficient shearing action and can be single or double bevel depending on the application.
• Reversible Blades (4-Sided): Many alligator shear blades are designed to be rotated, offering four distinct cutting edges before needing regrinding or replacement. This maximizes blade life.
• Custom Profiles: Depending on the specific material being cut or the desired cut shape, blades with specialized profiles or notches can be manufactured.

The working principle involves the hinged upper blade being forced down by a hydraulic cylinder (or sometimes mechanical means) onto the stationary lower blade, with the material to be cut placed between them. The high force exerted by the shear cleanly severs the material. The length of the blades (ranging from 6 inches to 48 inches or more) and the cutting force of the shear determine the type and thickness of material that can be processed.
