What do Sheeter Knives Mean?

Sheeter knives, also known as cut-off knives or cross-cutting knives, are industrial cutting blades used in sheeter machines. These machines are designed to cut large rolls of material, most commonly paper, but also including board, non-woven fabrics, film, foil, labels, tape, textiles, packaging materials, carpet, rubber, and even thin metals, into precise sheets of predetermined lengths. Sheeter knives are crucial for achieving accurate and clean cuts in high-volume converting operations. The term “sheeter knives” directly refers to the knives used in sheeting machines.

Uses and Applications of Sheeter Knives

Sheeter knives are indispensable in various industries for converting rolled materials into sheets. Their primary applications include:

  • Industrie du Papier : Cutting large rolls of paper into sheets for printing, writing, and other end uses. This includes various paper grades like copy paper, security paper, specialty papers, and cardboard.
  • Printing Industry: Sheeting printed rolls into individual sheets for further processing like binding, collating, and packaging.
  • Industrie de l'Emballage : Cutting rolls of paperboard, corrugated board, film, and foil into sheets or blanks for carton and box manufacturing, as well as for wrapping applications.
  • Industrie Textile : Cutting rolls of fabric and non-woven materials into sheets for garment manufacturing or other textile products.
  • Fabrication d'étiquettes : Sheeting rolls of label stock into individual labels or label sets.
  • Converting Industries: Cutting a wide range of rolled materials like film, foil, tape, and other flexible materials into sheets of specific dimensions.
  • Carpet Manufacturing: Cutting rolls of carpet into individual pieces or tiles.
  • Other Material Processing: Sheeting rolls of rubber, insulation materials, and other industrial materials.

Common Materials for Sheeter Knives

The materials used for sheeter knives must be of high quality to ensure clean cuts, long blade life, and resistance to wear, especially when processing different types of materials, some of which can be abrasive. Common materials include:

  • Tool Steel (e.g., D2, A2, O1): Offers a good balance of hardness, toughness, and wear resistance, suitable for many sheeting applications, especially for paper and similar materials.
  • Acier rapide (HSS) (par exemple, M2, M4) : Provides excellent wear resistance and the ability to maintain a sharp edge at high cutting speeds, suitable for higher volumes and some coated or slightly abrasive materials.
  • Powder Metallurgy Steels (PM) (e.g., ASP, CPM 10V): Offer superior wear resistance and toughness compared to conventional tool steels, extending blade life, especially when processing more demanding materials.
  • Carbide Inlaid or Solid Carbide: Provides exceptional hardness and wear resistance, ideal for very high production volumes and when processing abrasive materials like heavily coated papers or certain synthetic materials. Carbide significantly extends blade life and reduces downtime for sharpening.

Sheeter knives are manufactured to extremely close tolerances to ensure precise and consistent cutting. They are often precision ground with specific bevel angles and surface finishes optimized for the material being cut to minimize dust and ensure clean edges.

Common Sheeter Knife Shapes

Sheeter knives are primarily straight blades, but variations exist in their design and edge profiles depending on the sheeter machine and the material being processed:

  • Couteaux droits : Long, linear blades with a sharpened edge. These are the most common type and can have various bevel configurations (single or double) depending on the application.
  • Cross-Cut Knives: Specifically designed for cutting across the web of material. These can be fixed or rotating.
  • Fixed Knives (Bed Knives): Stationary blades against which the moving web is cut by a rotating knife or a moving upper knife.
  • Rotating Knives (Fly Knives): Blades that rotate and move with the material momentarily to make a clean cut without stopping the web.
  • Serrated Knives: Blades with a toothed edge, used for specific materials or to initiate a tear.
  • Inlaid Knives: Blades made with a base material and a cutting edge made of a harder, more wear-resistant material (like carbide or HSS) inlaid into it.
  • Solid Knives: Blades made entirely from a single material, such as solid carbide or powder metallurgy steel, for maximum wear resistance.

The working principle of sheeter knives involves a precise shearing action. In many sheeter machines, a rotating knife (fly knife) moves in synchronization with the material web, making a clean cut against a stationary bed knife. The accuracy of the cut length is determined by the precise timing and speed synchronization of the knife and the web. The sharpness and the correct angle of the sheeter knives are crucial for a clean, dust-free cut and to prevent tearing or damage to the material. Proper maintenance, including regular sharpening, is essential for maintaining cut quality and extending the life of the sheeter knives.
