What do Sheeter Knives Mean?

Sheeter knives, also known as cut-off knives or cross-cutting knives, are industrial cutting blades used in sheeter machines. Uses and Applications of Sheeter Knives

Sheeter knives are indispensable in various industries for converting rolled materials into sheets. Their primary applications include:

• Carbide Inlaid or Solid Carbide: Provides exceptional hardness and wear resistance, ideal for very high production volumes and when processing abrasive materials like heavily coated papers or certain synthetic materials. Carbide significantly extends blade life and reduces downtime for sharpening.

Sheeter knives are manufactured to extremely close tolerances to ensure precise and consistent cutting. They are often precision ground with specific bevel angles and surface finishes optimized for the material being cut to minimize dust and ensure clean edges.

Common Sheeter Knife Shapes

Sheeter knives are primarily straight blades, but variations exist in their design and edge profiles depending on the sheeter machine and the material being processed:

• Facas retas: Long, linear blades with a sharpened edge. These are the most common type and can have various bevel configurations (single or double) depending on the application.
• Cross-Cut Knives: Specifically designed for cutting across the web of material. These can be fixed or rotating.
• Fixed Knives (Bed Knives): Stationary blades against which the moving web is cut by a rotating knife or a moving upper knife.
• Rotating Knives (Fly Knives): Blades that rotate and move with the material momentarily to make a clean cut without stopping the web.
• Serrated Knives: Blades with a toothed edge, used for specific materials or to initiate a tear.
• Inlaid Knives: Blades made with a base material and a cutting edge made of a harder, more wear-resistant material (like carbide or HSS) inlaid into it.
• Solid Knives: Blades made entirely from a single material, such as solid carbide or powder metallurgy steel, for maximum wear resistance.

The working principle of sheeter knives involves a precise shearing action. In many sheeter machines, a rotating knife (fly knife) moves in synchronization with the material web, making a clean cut against a stationary bed knife. The accuracy of the cut length is determined by the precise timing and speed synchronization of the knife and the web. The sharpness and the correct angle of the sheeter knives are crucial for a clean, dust-free cut and to prevent tearing or damage to the material. Proper maintenance, including regular sharpening, is essential for maintaining cut quality and extending the life of the sheeter knives.
